Final Fantasy XV, everything you ever wanted?

Final Fantasy XV was announced about a decade ago, I already loved the way it looked and I was really hoping to play it as soon as possible. That I had to wait a decade was unfortunate but it was worth the wait because Final Fantasy XV is amazing! How amazing? Well let's find out!

Friends till the end?

Already at the start of the game you get a pretty strong feeling what is going to matter in this game and friendship is probably the most important thing of everything. Noctis (you play as him) and his three friends, Gladiolus, Prompto and Ignis, are going to need eachother to make it out alive and will be in for some challenges. Wether that's beating a big monster or deciding who should drive the car. The thing is that this friendship will play a big part in the game. It didn't surprise me that at the beginning of the game  when they have to push the car that you hear the song stand by me, which pretty much confirms what I already thought and that is that friendship is going to be the key to victory.

Fast and flexible battle system?

Absolutely! Things can go so fast that it almost makes your head spin but you get used to this quick way of playing and it works out perfect! The way you can easily dodge an attack by just holding X (Xbox One controls) or block certain attacks by pressing X at the right time so you can parry it with B that deals some serious damage. Then there are chain attacks that can build up to some heavy damage, you do this by simply holding the B button pressed. Then you have warp attacks, you press RB and Y and you charge at an enemy or you can press Y when you look at a blue highlighted area to escape the battle for a moment so you can regain your health and magic. Then when you're done resting you can jump back in action which is all very cool and effective! What I really like are the teamwork moves where you give an order to one of your party members and he will do his special ability and you can then follow up if you press B at the right moment. This can be very effective again certain enemies. For example Gladiolus has a big two handed sword he can use to tackle a big enemy so you and the others can dive in to hit the creature in his weak spot, Ignis can mark multiple enemies and Noctis can then launch several strikes against these creatures and if you press B at the right time you do a painful finishing move on the last marked enemy. Working together can help you beat even tough enemies. I was exploring in the wild and bumped into a level 12 enemy with my party of level 4. You would normally think that it was game over but with good team work and a nice bonus I got from eating certain food (I got extra health and I could deal more damage thanks to that bonus) I could actually beat this enemy without even dying. If you do run out of health then you go into danger mode, this means you need to get to a safe spot and rest, which means warp to a safe spot or hide behind an object on the ground and you will restore your health and magic if needed. If you do keep taking damage you will die and then it's game over, so try to avoid that at all costs!

Friends with benefits?

No no, nothing like that! But your friends in the game do have some useful abilities, which actually can make the difference in a fight or make the game even more fun to play. For example Ignis can cook, which gives you a nice bonus that helps you in fights. You can pick what he cooks and the higher cooking level he gets the more things he can cook that have a more powerful bonus. After some battles he will get inspiration for a new recipe but also eating in a diner will sometimes inspire him for a new recipe. I also got an invitation to help him with cooking breakfast and you bond with Ignis a bit, it also earns you some sweet AP (ability points) but more about that later. Prompto will take photos during your travels but also during fights, you can view these photos when you're at camp and decide if you want to save some and even share them with other people if you really like one. Then there is Gladiolus that gains points towards survival and this pretty much means you explore into the wild, I haven't really discovered what kind of bonus this gives you but it's nice that my need for exploration actually benefits the team. Noctis enjoys fishing and you can actually catch your dinner while fishing, the more he fishes the better he gets at it.

Level up the way you want to?

You level up whenever you set up camp or sleep in a hotel, then all the experience you earned during the day will be used to help you level up and so you gain more AP. You also gain AP if you follow up instructions from your friends or listen to their advice. These ability points you can use to learn new skills or other abilities. This all happens on some sort of grid and you activate new nodes when you have earned enough ability points. You can see in the bottom of the screen who benefits from these new abilities. This is an easy and quick way to learn new things and helps you become more powerful and effective in battle or help you earn AP even faster with certain activities.

Magic is different?

Well magic is still magic, but this time things work a bit different. You see Noctis is really the only one that has magic, so his warp blade skill is just for him. But he can grand others acces to magic by putting it in bottles which can be equipped by other members of your team. You can earn magical energy in the wild and see these spots on the map, so if you don't mind walking around a bit you can easily save up some magical energy to get some acces to magic. The problem with magic is that it doesn't just hurt the enemies, it also hurts you and your friends. So be careful where you use it otherwise you set your friends on fire or even yourself!

So much freedom?

Yeah the game is a big open world and you can go where you want to, at least for as far as the borders of a certain area let you. This is mostly for your own protection because you don't want to go to a high level area when you're a low level team! You can do a lot of side missions if you feel like doing something else or just want to earn some extra money, experience or AP. You can also go on a hunt that earns you some sweet money, which is useful for buying better equipment and other items. If you want to explore then you can do that, if you want to just slay monsters then you can do that, if you want to drive around in the care then you can do that manually, if you want to play some funny mini games then you can do that, if you want to play side missions or do other activities then you also have the choice to do that. There is so much to do and I bet that this will keep you busy for a long time! So if you're in for a new adventure then Final Fantasy XV might just be the game for you. Even for people that are new to Final Fantasy are in for a great game because the game will absolutely be fun to play. It wouldn't surprise me if Final Fantasy XV is going to be the game of the year because it's very impressive!
