Sinful Sunday: To report or not to report another gamer?
A lot of games with online multiplayer have a report player option, this isn't something that should be taken lightly but at the same time people often think that this is mostly for show. But reporting a player can lead to actions being taken to some players, mostly based on the amount of people that report the same person. This often leads to something that needs to be checked because if enough people say that this person is cheating or a toxic person to play with then the chance that this is true becomes bigger with each report from another player. So that kind of makes me wonder, have you ever reported someone?
Why would you report another player?
I honestly hate reporting other players, I find it such a lame thing to do and honestly I would only do that to people that are obviously cheating or being really toxic. Sometimes I have doubts and then it's really difficult for me to report them, because if I'm wrong then I'm accusing another player of something he or she didn't do. I honestly don't want to be that guy who accuses other players that did nothing wrong. Sometimes it's just the game that sucks or has weird moments that gave a benefit to the other player and that might be tough for you to accept. Especially in games where you're out of the match if you die once. The higher the risks the more frustration you often deal with. So you might want to keep that in mind when you play these games and also when you're about to report someone. Are you honestly seeing something that marks this person as a cheater or are you just pissed off at this person and you want to report them to feel better? I think this happens quite a lot, I know that I've been accused of cheating in Max Payne 3 multiplayer, I did so well in a Branco HQ deathmatch where the difference between me and the number two was more than twenty kills. I was dominating in that match, which doesn't happen often in a game, and apparently this guy and others in the match couldn't handle that. They got mad and sent me hateful messages, told me that they reported me and that I was a cheater. I guess doing well in a match is the same as cheating to some people, which is of course stupid. Besides we all can have a good moment in a game, no need to cheat for that!
Have you ever reported another player?
Yes, but usually for the right reasons. For example in Overwatch I now report every player that rage quits. That might seem lame but honestly these people are toxic and can easily screw your game over. Just imagine that you're playing a ranked match and this random douchebag that doesn't talk, which is already dumb, and then decides to just quit. That's already enough reason to be pissed off at this person, but instead of going through the hateful messages I prefer to just report him or her and hope that others do the same so these kind of people can find another game to be toxic in. Some people might think it's sad to report other people and I do agree that it can be sad. To report people for dumb reason or the wrong reasons is sad, but keep in mind that if you don't take action against cheaters and toxic players that it's only going to become worse. I understand that you can be frustrated with a game or other players but being this toxic douchebag in a game doesn't help anyone. It's easy to get mad but it's better to just take a break and do something else. I don't like reporting players and I prefer to avoid games that have a lot of cheaters or toxic players in it. But if I want to play a certain game then I'm not going to let these type of people stop me from playing it. Unfortunately that often leads to unpleasant encounters and just not fun situations, so I wouldn't recommend playing certain games to other people. But a game like Overwatch is a game I used to play a lot and that I enjoyed playing a lot. I hope it can be as much fun as it was before but sometimes a game is just so full of unpleasant people that it's really difficult to enjoy playing it. Unless you feel like reporting a lot of people for rage quitting, being toxic to other players or using cheats. I think most people just want to play a game and enjoy playing it and not start reporting others, that's the the reason why we all started playing games and it sucks when you have to be the one that reports these players.
Do you think that it helps when you report someone?
I don't know, I hope that it helps but I can't help but get the feeling that a lot of these reports end up somewhere and nobody is really doing something with them. Developers would never admit that but it wouldn't surprise me if that actually happens in some games. I think all we can do is hope that the unpleasant people are removed from the game and that the fun people stay in it. That would be the ideal situation, unfortunately that's pretty far from reality. Maybe what does work is if it makes you feel better that you at least did you job, you reported the cheater or the toxic player and all you can do is hope that enough other people did the same so this person is removed from the game. Because if you're toxic you should play single player games and if you're a cheater then you shouldn't play games at all! Some developers do say that the reports are being taken seriously so it's important that you don't just start reporting people for the fun of it. It really sucks when people get blamed for something they didn't do. It's not easy to always find proof and if you have doubts then it's probably better that you don't report them because I would rather not accuse someone who is innocent. But if someone looks and smells like shit then it's often shit, there is no denying of that! All I'm saying is don't be too quick with your judgement, because a report can have some serious concequences in certain games. Even if you might not believe in it.
