Why do you accept bad things in certain games?
When I read certain game reviews and here other people talk about certain games I often see people accept bad things in games, things that shouldn't be acceptable at all and yet they seem to accept it because they enjoy playing that game. Which makes sense but does that mean you should shut your eyes for the bad things in that game? No, I don't think so!
Good games have bad things in them?
I know I keep saying bad things but what I really mean with that is things in a game that annoy you or that are just not that fun to do. Think of repetitive missions, a bug or glitch that makes your character freak out or some performance issues. In certain games these are considered as really bad things, things that can't be and won't be accepted. But then there are games where similar issues are and yet here these bad things, or issues if you want to call them that, are more acceptable and suddenly don't seem to be such a big problem. This makes it difficult for me to take someone seriously because apparently the same issue can have a different meaning depending on the game. But let's be honest here, most games have some issues and what often makes us, gamers, accept that is when the good things outweigh the bad things in a game. That makes sense and I think that is acceptable, but at the same time it seems wrong. Because if a certain issue is such a big deal in one game then why not make this such an issue in the other game? I guess sometimes we're just too blinded by all the pretty things in certain games that it makes the bad things a bit less bad or less of a problem. For that reason I would never want to review games, I wouldn't mind giving my opinion but a professional review is just not for me. Sometimes I'm just blinded by all the nice things in a game that I notice the bad things not immediately. You might have noticed that I sometimes have a positive opinion about a game and then a week later I suddenly have a bit less optimistic view on that game. But you shouldn't base a review on one experience or even one day of playing a game, you need to play the game for at least a week and then you have a good chance to have a full experience of everything that game has to offer. Both the good things and the bad things.
Why do we accept certain issues in certain games?
Like I mentioned before, probably because the good things in the game outweigh the bad things. Hardly any game is perfect, every game has something that is less fun or just not that good. Even games I love playing have certain issues. For example in Skyrim you sometimes have the infinite loading screen, it doesn't happen as much as I used to but I've seen it happen a couple of times in the remastered edition. Does that suck? Yes it does! Does that ruin the game? No, not for me at least. Thanks to all the autosaves whenever you enter or exit an area or building you often have a save pretty close to where things went wrong. Of course you can get screwed over so if you want to be completely safe you can always make a manual save just before you go to the next area in a dungeon or before you enter a building. Just to make certain you don't lose progress. It's a small sacrifice in a game that is a lot of fun to play. That doesn't mean I'm blind to this issue, but it would be too much to punish the game severely for that. It's an unfortunate situation in a fun game, unpleasant but definitely not bad enough to ruin the entire game. That doesn't mean I'm happy with it nor that I want to accept this, but considering I've played games where things are a lot worse I've gotten used to these kind of issues. Not being able to save, dealing with massive lag or having enemies that are immune to damage are much bigger issues in a game. These are things that do ruin a game for me and it makes it that much harder to enjoy that game. Issues in a game are hardly ever ok, but I don't want to make a big drama of it all. Yes there are issues and if possible they should be fixed, but as long as I can play a game and have fun in it without too much trouble then I can say that I'm not that easily bothered by some minor issues. But I do try to always mention these issues when I talk about a new game I've been playing. Because I think people would like to know about these issues and what can be acceptable to one person can be unacceptable to another person.
