Outfits in games, not because you need them but because you like them

Have you ever had an outfit for your character in a game that you liked so much that you kept it on eventhough you had better outfit but that you didn't like that much? Then you're probably just like me when it comes to these kind of games that give outfits certain stats and you just don't care about those. Even in a first person type of game I would still want my character to look good, who cares that the ugly armor gives me higher stats! I want to look good! Because looking good often relates to feeling good, at least I want to believe that's true.

Why would you wear an outfit with lower stats?

It's easy to keep swapping outfits just for the stats, I know I do this in games like Diablo 3 and I also did that in the legendary adventures of Van Helsing III but I'm never really happy about it. Sometimes you get this ugly piece of clothing that just looks stupid. For example a hat that ruins the whole outfit but if you can't hide headwear that means you have to look at that. In the Diablo 3 type of games it's not a huge issue since you have to view from above on your character, but in a game like Dragon Age or Mass Effect you have a third person view and then it becomes very important to me how my character looks. In Dragon Age 2 I got a really cool mage outfit after the first part of the game and it had terrible stats compared to outfits I got later in the game, but I kept it on for most of the game because I really like the look of the character with that outfit on and a lot of the other outfits didn't give you such a cool look. So either have good stats on your character with an ugly outfit or bad stats with a cool looking outfit. Maybe I'm an idiot here but I want my character to look good so I would always pick the outfit with the bad stats. This also forces you to do better, the game will be a bit more difficult but if that means you look good in the cutscenes and conversations then that's worth it in my opinion!

Does it really matter what you wear in the game?

Not really, I mean in certain games there is value in outfits because of a bonus you get or it helps you blend in but usually outfits are there just for cosmetic reasons. There are so many games where people spend a small fortune just one outfits alone because they want their character(s) to look good and I honestly don't blame them. I don't mind the standard outfit, sometimes the standard outfits are ugly though, but it's nice if you can switch because you don't want to look exactly like all the other players in the game. But above all I want my character to look good, to have a look that I like and that I'm comfortable with. Which means no bright colours for me or anything that makes me uncomfortable just looking at that outfit. I never played as D.VA in Overwatch with her default skin, the pink was just too much for me. But with the carbon fiber skin, black, she looked really cool and I finally gave this character a chance and I have a lot of fun playing this character. You might call that silly but why would you play as a character if you're not comfortable with the way he or she looks? Even in a first person shooter that can be enough reason for someone not to play as a certain character. Of course I can adjust and sometimes I'll have to in certain games, but if I can choose and there are customization options then you can bet your ass on it that I will change things so that I'm comfortable with my character(s).
