Kingdom Come: Deliverance, yay or nay?

I like big open world games where you can dive into and return to the social world weeks later. It's one of the many reasons why I like games like Skyrim and Dragon Age: Inquisition. But I have to admit that with KC:D I'm a bit reluctant to buy it because the game looks good but I've heard some bad things about the game and going from a fantasy RPG to a simulation RPG is something I'm not so certain about. So let's try to look at some of the things this game has to offer and hopefully it sheds some more light on this game and if you would be interested in buying it.

The most accurate RPG?

A lot of RPGs are fun and usually fantasy plays a big role in that, but KC:D doesn't have any fantasy elements, it's a lot more like a simulation RPG and that means that there is going to be moments where you'll hate the game or might get bored. For example trying to pick a lock is often not a big deal in a game, in KC:D you actually have to do your best to pick that lock otherwise you just look like a fool. The big amounts of dialogue is a boring experience for some people but I think that it does offer you a pretty unique way of communicating with the NPCs in the game. During conversations you can pick different types of dialogue and some of them are marked with a symbol which often means that it will have a certain effect. Are you going to charm the other person? Are you going to play on their feelings? Or are you just going to intimidate them? You can pick your own dialogue and this can result into some interesting outcomes. For example why fight if you can talk your way out of a fight? I don't see that happen a lot in other games so I have to applause the developers of KC:D for that option here. But the worst part about the game is the start, how you're absolutely horrible at everything and you need to learn everything.

From zero to hero?

That's the idea, at least I certainly hope so. You play as Henry and when your family is murdered you want revenge. But it's not like you can just get there and get it over with. It's a journey and on that journey you'll meet a lot of people and learn a lot of things. Which is useful because at first you're a nobody, the son of a blacksmith and just no one special. You have to learn how to fight, how to pick locks or how to become a smooth talker. It seems simple but this goes pretty slow in KC:D and this is already one of the points where a lot of people will want to pass on this game. A lot of people like things to go fast, grinding is one thing but they want to see progress and eventhough you have progress in KC:D it's slow. But it is rewarding, putting a lot of time into the game does result in actually getting better. Did you suck at first at fighting? After ten hours of playing you might actually become quite decent at it! Unless you spend so much time talking and checking out the environment that you're not that far in the game. This isn't a hack and slash game and if you're into fast action and little to no communication then this game isn't for you because you do a lot of talking in this game. You can even romance some lovely ladies, but you better look good because if you're covered in blood or mud they will most likely not be interested in you! So appearance is actually very important in this game, something you might want to keep in mind!

The game has some issues?

Unfortunately the game has issues. There are some bugs and glitches that make playing this game quite frustrating at certain moments. A sudden crash when you haven't saved in some time can really make you furious. The only way to save the game is to sleep or drink a save potion and those are pretty rare. So if the game suddenly crashes you're fucked and that is really something that breaks the game for me right now. I hate losing so much progress and that it can happen just like that. The developers are busy with fixing it so hopefully this won't be an issue for long but for now it's something you should keep in mind if you plan to buy this game! Another thing that sucks is how there are invisible walls in the game, this pretty much destroys the illusion of living in an open world and forces you into a certain way. It's a shame that this is in the game but I don't consider this as game breaking, it's more like an unfortunate thing inside a game but definitely something you can live with.

Would you recommend buying this game?

If you like simulation games, as in a more realistic way of playing instead of the button bashing or rush gameplay tactics, then this game might be something for you. Especially if you're interested in history and don't mind going through a lot of conversations and learning a bit. Certain things are a bit weird and uncomfortable in this game but you can definitely get used to it. But the thing that really keeps me from actually buying this game are the game issues, specifically the sudden game crashes that will make you lose progress. Is there anything more frustrating than losing an hour or more progress because the game suddenly crashes? I can't think of it right now but it's definitely something I don't want to be bothered with. The save system is already challenging but adding the sudden game crashes makes it a very frustrating experience at certain times. So I won't buy this game until that gets fixed because I don't want to deal with that kind of nonsense. So it might be smart to first rent the game to see what you think of it. My advice is to wait a moment with buying it and buy it after the sudden game crashes are fixed. That should keep the frustration in this game to a minimum. Don't expect to like this game just because you love playing a game like Skyrim. I know both games are first person RPGs but KC:D has no fantasy in it, so don't expect dragons to drop down from the sky or elves hopping around! Soak in as much information as you can about the game before you buy it, it might just keep you from buying a game you might not really like or confirm that you really want to play this game. It's better to be safe than sorry!
