Monster Hunter: World, my experience with the game.

This is the first time I actually played a Monster Hunter game and this plays a huge role in my opinion about this game. Not knowing a lot of things and being bombarded by a shit load of text on the screen about so many things isn't just boring but also something you can skip through quite easily which will screw you over later in the game. My opinion about this game is mostly founded by my own experience with this game and I have to admit that my experience with this game isn't really that positive. Perhaps because I was playing the game wrong, because I didn't know about certain things and because I was playing on my own. Does that mean that Monster Hunter: World is a bad game? I think it means that I had a rough time with this game but for others it can still be fun, feel free to read about my experience with the game and decide for yourself if you're interested in the game or not.

The mute hero returns?

I like creating my own character and Monster Hunter: World gives you quite a lot of options with character creation. They even have a part where you can pick a unique voice for your hero, but this voice is only for combat grunts, when your character is hit by an enemy attack or when you do a certain emote. Other than that your character doesn't say a word and the other characters in the game apparently find that normal because no one ever comments about your character not responding to the things they say to him or her. I really don't like that, being this character that is apparently going to play a big role and probably will save everyone but someone who doesn't say a word. That could be modesty or just a dumb decision. I know that some people feel more comfortable with characters that don't talk, but I personally prefer a character that can speak and will respond to other characters talking to him or her. But don't let this ruin the game for you, there are a lot of customization options and in the middle of combat you don't really think about your hero not talking. It's just weird and something that doesn't really belong in this time anymore, at least that's my opinion! Other characters do have a voice and will talk to you but most of the time it's just a little bit and the rest is just text on the screen. I think the developers did that for people who don't want to listen to all that and make it easy to skip through these conversations. But sometimes you can easily miss out on important information that can screw you over later in the game.

Don't be afraid of reading if you want to play this game?

Something I noticed in Monster Hunter: World is that you'll have to do a lot of reading. Not just the conversations, which you could always skip, but also all the information about items and monsters will require you to read a lot. Pretty much everything in the game has a tutorial and as easy as it is to try and skip that you might actually want to read it if you don't want to get stuck on something because you don't know how it works or what you need to do. It's a bit overwhelming at times and I can't say that I like all of that. There are so many items and so many things you can use and do that I can't remember everything and I often forget about certain things. This is very annoying and makes the game less fun to play. How was I supposed to know that I can place traps to stop monsters from running away? Oh there was a tutorial about that? Well I guess I must have missed that or forgot about it considering you go through a lot of those. My main objection to this game is that there is just too much going on, there is too much detail to certain things and that is very overwhelming to new players like myself. I think once you get familiar with this game, mostly by just playing and learning, things will be better but at first it's just way too much stuff coming at you all at once. You get 14 starting weapons, so that's already something you have to figure out pretty fast which weapons works for you and which weapons you're really bad with.

You're not alone?

There are other players in the game as well, if I'm not mistaken there will be 16 players in one lobby and you can group up with up to three other people. This makes the game more fun and it also makes fighting certain monsters a lot easier. But don't worry if you're more of a solo player, you can definitely go on solo hunts and do your own thing. Eventhough you can select a private online session other people could still join you, your session just doesn't show up in the search menu but someone can still join if you invite them or if they click on your profile and choose to join you. But there's more, it's not just your hunter that goes out in the world you also have a little cat friend called a palico. These are creatures that look a lot like cats and you can fully customize your own personal palico and name him (or her). This palico will follow you around in the game and on a hunt the palico will help you in the fight and the palico will also gather items. You can also find a palico in the wild and this one will be called a tail chaser and they will also help you for the duration of that hunt and also gather items for you. The palico isn't that amazing in battle but sometimes they can be the distraction you need to use an item or to flank the monster.

Combat sucks?

This is my opinion, I honestly don't like the combat system in this game. The buttons for combat are already lame, because I really don't like using my right trigger, Y and B buttons for combat while I have no jump button. Then the time it takes to use an item is really bad, like leaving you open for a heavy attack and there is little you can do about that, and the fact that your blade is getting dull really fast. Which means either you have to sharpen it during the fight, not something I would recommend when the monster is attacking you, or having to deal with a weapon that does less damage. I just feel like your character is nerfed when you play on your own. The damage you do seems very little, often just six or eight damage unless you get to hit them on a more critical part when it will be doubled. That seems ridiculous considering some monster can kill you in two hits, of course these monsters are a much higher level than you and you should avoid them until you're strong enough to face them. Then there is the stamina bar that fucks you over so much. There are monster attacks that make stamina recovery a lot slower and there is even a punishment where you only get half a stamina bar, which makes evading really expensive (two dodge rolls and you're out of stamina). When you're out of stamina you move really slow and you can dodge roll anymore, you have to stand still and recover all your stamina which once again leaves you open for some heavy attacks. Then there are monsters that have ridiculous attacks that fuck you over so much. How about a knockback, stun and poison attack all at once? Wow my shitty weapon could only dream of doing that. What's worse is that when you finally do land some hits on the monster and the creature is wounded that this asshole starts running away making you look like a moron running after him. Of course you move slower or you'll run out of stamina before you can stop him which means stand still and wait. The monster will go to another spot and start recovering, which really sucks when that asshole can undo all the work you did. Some monster can even fly and maybe there is a way to counter that but for now I just see them take off and I just stand there like a jackass. I wish you could wield a melee and ranged weapon at the same time, have a bit more effect on monsters with your attacks and maybe have a different button layout that doesn't require me to stick to the right side of my controller. It wouldn't surprise me that some people love the combat system but for me it's just pure frustration!

Would you recommend this game?

Based on my experience with the game? No I wouldn't. But in all honesty this game isn't for everyone and I think it's safe to say that Monster Hunter: World isn't really my kind of game. It's not really bad just not really for me. Which is a shame but unfortunately it's the truth. I will try to keep playing and improve a bit but I just don't feel any joy playing the game, a lot of things annoy me and I just don't have a good time playing this game. It might have something to do with my simple gameplay, mostly hack and slash, and that I prefer to play games on my own. Perhaps that's the problem and that means I can remedy that, but it doesn't take away certain other things I don't like about the game. Your character not talking, the large amounts of text you need to read when you pick up something new or do something new and the shitty lock on system in combat. It's something I don't like and I don't see myself liking that a week or a month from now. Monster Hunter: World is for some people but definitely not for everyone and I think I'm one of the people for whom this game isn't much fun. That doesn't mean that I think it's all bad. I love the big open world, the exploration and some of the side missions can be fun. For example some fishing or hunting smaller, less challenging, monsters. The game does offer you a lot and with a group of friends you'll definitely have a better time even if you don't know what you're doing. If you're uncertain about the game then feel free to rent it or wait for it to be for sale so you can at least save yourself some money. It's not really a bad game, it's just not a game I like that much.
